The apartment, located in an iconic square in the Brera district, is situated in an elegant building constructed in the 1980s.

The L-shaped layout of the unit allowed for a clear division into two distinct areas: the first, near the entrance, corresponding to the sleeping quarters; the second, perpendicular to it, housing the living area.

The owners expressed the need for just one bedroom but also requested three additional sleeping spaces to occasionally accommodate their children. From this requirement, the idea emerged to design a fluid and continuous living area that could, however, be transformed as needed.

Thus, the kitchen—a pivotal space for the owners—becomes a raised podium, central both to the spatial perception and the symbolic essence of the home. It punctuates the long living area and acts as a hinge between the study and the actual living room. A bench-like unit extends from the podium into the living room, and hosts a storage unit, a bar surface, and even a daytime workstation. Furthermore, it conceals a pull-out bed that slides underneath the kitchen podium.

On the opposite side of the living room is the study, which includes a sofa bed with two additional sleeping spaces. This room can be made independent thanks to a custom sliding glass door. Even when the door is closed, the space remains visually unified while being functionally distinct, with its geometry and materials clearly defining its purpose.

The sleeping quarters were conceived in stark contrast to the openness of the living area. While the latter embodies the idea of a “piazza”, the sleeping area is enclosed, introspective, and dominated by a sense of privacy. The bedroom, wardrobe area, and master bathroom intersect to form a complex spatial unit, where pure geometries and corresponding colors delineate functional zones.

The corridor becomes the contact point between the two areas of the home, an imaginary threshold that delicately reveals one area or the other through an inclined partition. This feature creates an effect of surprise and pleasant unpredictability: the textured partition transitions into a folded ribbon, becoming a ceiling first and then a pillar, guiding visitors on an architectural journey. Along the way, subtle repetitions and small revelations unify the visual experience and define the activities within.
